3.Household Waste Guide

Items accepted for waste collection

cautionYou cannot put out bulky waste or items that are not collected by the City Government.

Where to put out waste

  • Waste collection point
  • Your waste collection point is specified. Please ask your neighbors where you should put out waste.

What days collection occurs

  • Twice a week. Collection days are set for each district.
  • The collection day is written on a sticker at the waste collection point. Please put out waste after checking the information.
  • If you do not know your collection day, for example if there is no sticker, please contact the collection Officein the area where you live.(Phone calls can only be made in Japanese.)
  • Waste is also collected on holidays. However, collection days may change during the year-end and New Year Holidays.

What time to put out waste

  • Please put out the garbage bags by 8:30 on the morning of the collection day.

cautionPlease do not put waste out on the day before collection or after it has been collected. Following the rules will keep the collection point clean for your neighborhood.

How to put out waste

  • Please put waste in a prepaid garbage bag designated by Sendai City and fasten the bag before putting it out for collection.家庭ごみ袋
  • The quantity you can put out at a time is 45ℓ in volume or 10kg in weight (roughly 1 large designated prepaid garbage bag).



  • When you want to put out a large quantity of waste at once→For Large Quantities of Waste
  • Waste that is not placed in designated prepaid garbage bags will not be collected.
  • Any waste improperly put out will not be collected.
  • To prevent crows and other animals from scattering waste, please put out the garbage bags according to your waste collection day and time.
  • For small rechargeable batteries including portable chargers, please see "Items Not Collected by the City Government". 
  • ⚠ Do not include batteries or small rechargeable batteries in your waste! If you do,there is a dangerous risk of ignition or explosion during waste collection and processing.batteries
  • It is a violation of the regulations not to use the designated prepaid garbage bags. Please note that plastic shopping bags from convenience stores,etc. cannot used. (Where to buy the designated prepaid garbage bags, the prices, etc.

Examples and instructions for putting out waste

Kitchen waste

Remove as much water from kitchen waste as possible before putting it in a designated prepaid garbage bag.

Used cooking oil

Absorb it with either cloth or paper, or use a coagulant to solidify it.

Disposable diapers

After disposing of feces in the toilet, roll the diaper up compactly with the stained part on the inside.

Fragments of glass or porcelain, knives, etc

1.Wrap them securely in thick paper or something similar.



2.Put them into a designated prepaid garbage bag (other household waste may be placed in the same bag).

3.Indicate“キケン(dangerous article)” in Japanese on the designated prepaid garbage bag containing these items.

Plastic goods (without plastic mark (plastics)logo)

Items measuring approximately 30cm or smaller, such as toys, plastic tanks, CDs, and video-tapes

cautionItems with a plastic mark logo are to be put out as plastic containers and packaging.

Tree branches from your garden

Only one bundle will be collected per time at waste collection points. From May to November, burdles can be collected door-to-door for free of charge if you apply to the Bulky Waste Reception Center for pick up. You may also bring them in yourself to the specialized facility. In this case, please contact your nearest collection office in your ward.

Other methods are used to dispose of cooking oil, small household appliances (30 cm or smaller), clothing and cloths

Cooking oil

There are collection boxes at supermarkets which displays the Oil mark (oil) logo.

Small household appliances

There are collection boxes at ward offices and some supermarkets.

Clothing and cloths

“Group-based recyclable resource collection” is carried out by local children’s clubs Also they can be taken to “recyclable resource collection racks” at ward offices (Miyagino, Wakabayashi, Izumi ward offices) and some citizen centers.
