Objectives
To share the latest domestic and international information on green purchasing and discuss its future direction
To announce the Green Purchasing Sendai Declaration to the world, which serves as a guideline for promoting green purchasing
To establish a network that promotes global collaboration on efforts towards green purchasing

I would like to restate our hearty gratitude for all those that have cooperated and participated in the 1st International Conference on Green Purchasing in Sendai. With more than 1,000 delegates including no less than 120 people from 37 countries and regions across the world, the conference was a great success.
We made a proposal to host an international conference on green purchasing at a local government session organized by ICLEI on the occasion of the Johannesburg Summit two years ago. I was encouraged when I observed attentive and intensive discussion at the sessions of the conference in Sendai because it now proves that green purchasing is a concern of the world.
The achievement of the conference, the Sendai Declaration on Green Purchasing, was proclaimed with applause of many delegates. The declaration includes the roles of citizens, businesses, NGOs and public organizations, the necessity of networking to promote green purchasing and a framework for the world-wide promotion of green purchasing.
I believe the 1st International Conference on Green Purchasing in Sendai made a solid step in promoting green purchasing. Again, I appreciate all the contributions to the conference.
Hajimu Fujii,
Chair, Steering Committee of the 1st International Conference on Green Purchasing in Sendai;
Mayor of Sendai
