Born in 1938. A 1961 graduate of the Department of Economics, First School of Political Science and Economics, Waseda University, he joined Fujitsu Tsushin Seizo (now Fujitsu Limited) the same year. After assuming the office of managing director and general manager of the System Department, and then executive director, he became president & CEO in 1998 and Chair & CEO in 2003.
In addition, he served as chairman of the Committee on Environment and Safety of Nippon Keidanren. He also acts as vice chairman of the Board of Councilors, Nippon Keidanren, vice-president of Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association, and vice-president of Communications and Information Network Association of Japan.

Born in Norway in 1948. In 1973 he earned his BS degree in biology and chemistry and in 1977 obtained a doctorate (Cand.real) (biology), both at Oslo University. From 1974 to 1977 he worked as an assistant at Oslo University and Norway Agricultural University. From 1986, he worked at the Polar Zone Climate Division, International Cooperation Department in Norway's Ministry of Environment. After becoming a member of the Steering Committee of the International Department, and a special advisor to the International Negotiation Secretariat for Climate Change and Atmospheric Pollution of the ministry, he became vice-director of the secretariat in 1994. In 1999 he assumed directorship of the Secretariat for UNEP Basel Convention and from 2001 has held his present position. In addition, he served as the chairman of the Pollutant Substance Special Committee of the National Environmental Pollution Control Office of Norway from 1981 to 1983, a chief representative of the Norwegian Delegation for negotiations on the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (1987, 1990, 1992), and chief for negotiations of Norwegian Delegation for the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change from 1988 to 1994. In 1999 he received the USEPA Stratospheric Ozone Layer Protection Award.

Is Green Purchasing a Panacea for the Global Environment?

This session clarified the concepts of green purchasing and its role in establishing a sustainable society, while discussing its position within public policies, its legal structure, and issues. The session also discussed quantitative assessments of the effects of green purchasing, and proposals for effectiveness measurements through international cooperation.

What are Green Purchasing Standards?

This session discussed product selection guidelines and methods, together with useful tools and information used in various countries to practice green purchasing.
The development of international guidelines, tools and databases was also discussed in the session.

This session identified the current situation and future of green purchasing efforts implemented by local companies in developing countries, especially Asia. Methods to increase green suppliers through international cooperation were discussed.
The session also discussed how to evaluate suppliers through social aspects as well as environmental aspects.
