Sendai City revised its Global Warming
Countermeasures Promotion Plan in FY 2002. The revision was based upon the Kyoto
Protocol and introduced a new objective for the Sendai area, the reduction of
greenhouse gas emissions, such as carbon dioxide, by 7% per capita by FY 2010
(based on FY 1990 emission levels). This target was determined by calculating
an amount that could be equally and appropriately reduced by each and every citizen. |

Sendai City has introduced solar
energy systems to elementary schools and other public facilities. Such systems
are not only effective in preventing global warming, but can also be utilized
to educate students and children. |

| |
The Sendai City Council for the Promotion
of Global Warming Countermeasures is an organization that was created to lead
individual voluntary efforts to prevent global warming. The Council continues
to enlighten citizens and practice its own countermeasures through partnerships
between individuals, companies, and the city administration. |
