Sendai has many traditional festival and lively events.
Sendai Aoba Matsuri Festival
(The 3rd Sunday in May and the previous day)
Visitors: Approx. 920,000
This traditional festival decorates the early summer in Sendai. The history of this festival started roughly 400 years ago in the Edo Period. The valiant parade of Yamaboko and the energetic sparrow dance liven the town.
Sendai Tanabata Festival
(August 6th-8th)
Visitors: Approx. 2,140,000
Gorgeous bamboo ornaments blow in the wind on covered streets. Residents decorate the streets with hand-made Tanabata ornaments, showing their pride in the history and background of this very famous festival.
Johzenji StreetJazz Festival
(The second Sunday in September and the previous day)
Visitors: Approx. 710,000
Musicians from all over the world gather in Sendai and perform throughout the town, filling the fresh air with music.
Sendai Pageant of Starlight
(December 12th-31st)
Visitors: Approx. 2,600,000
Residents of Sendai started this festival with the hope of "warming up the Sendai winter." The Santa Claus parade takes place under the rows of zelkova trees, the symbolic tree of Sendai, and local residents walk together under the trees as they forget about the cold air.
