Developing a Creative Cluster
With the aim of establishing a fresh, dynamic and pluralistic environment where creative people can come together to connect, cooperate and support each other, the City of Sendai is working on developing and strengthening creative industries, such as design and printing, and media contents and IT to enable them to serve as points of intersection between areas of culture and commerce. We are also working on building and expanding the number of creative industries unique to Sendai, a project we call the Development of a Creative Cluster.
With the population decreasing, we can no longer expect the economy to continue to expand simply as a result of the sheer weight of increasing numbers, which means we must embrace the idea of enhancing goods and services in terms of quality in order to maintain urban vitality. One way we have identified of doing this is by providing greater support for creative activities, which will help us to further advance and add more value to our local industries.
Sendai is making efforts to attract both young and world-class creative class workers and related enterprises to the city to help develop, broaden and deepen its own Creative Cluster. These efforts include publicizing the City's existing creative aspects and activities, seeking out people with creative potential and working on developing local businesses.
Creative industries arise and thrive in places where cultural activities, such as theater and music, abound. We are therefore working to support and promote local cultural events and attractions as an added enticement for individuals and enterprises dealing in creative fields to come to Sendai.
Through these measures, the City of Sendai aims to create new businesses and hybrid venture enterprises merging culture, art and commerce.
Design
A lacquered, pyramid-shaped jubako (a stacked, food-serving box). A gilded tea cup. A spherical bowl with as many uses as your imagination allows. The works of Koichiro KIMURA, a world-famous designer living in Sendai, showcases the integration of innovation and renovation.
Content Production
A new graduate school has been founded in AER, an intelligent building located right in front of Sendai Railway Station. The graduate school will educate producers and creators, with a vision to create and develop media content from the Tohoku Region to the world. The school is now functioning as a center of content production in Sendai / Yamagata region.
Cafe
SC3 Caf presented by Sendai Creative Cluster Consortium is a microcosm of the City's creative commercial scene.
Oroshimachi
Sendai City provides special subsidy programs to attract creative industry enterprises in the Oroshimachi area.
