[The road to sister city affiliation]
Discussions concerning a sister city affiliation between Sendai and a Soviet city were held in 1962, during a visit from the secretary general of the Soviet-Japan Association. Minsk, which was the capital of the Belorussian Soviet Socialist Republic at the time, was recommended. After exchanging various documents and materials, a ten-member official delegation from Sendai visited Minsk and exchanged documents to make the sister city relationship official.
[ Brief history ]
With a 900-year old history, Minsk is one of Russia's oldest cities. It has been prospering as a center of commerce and industry since the 15th century.
1793 Minsk becomes Russian territory
1991 Minsk becomes capital of Belarus, which gained independence from the Soviet Union

The mayor of Minsk visited Sendai to participate in the International Sister City Conference
1991 Advanced medical instruments were sent to Minsk to support relief measures for the victims of the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster. This disaster also prompted Sendai to commence a training program for medical trainees from Minsk.
