[The road to sister city affiliation]
On Mother's Day in 1951, members of the Sendai Branch of the Association
of University Women sent flowers to an American soldier who was hospitalized
in Sendai. This soldier recounted this story to his mother in Riverside,
who was a member of the association's Riverside Branch. The story caused
a sensation in Riverside and lead to the establishment of a scholarship
for female Tohoku University students. This story was a deciding factor
when the Riverside City Council chose Sendai among several sister city
candidates. |
