CITY of SENDAI

02 Hot Sports Fan Power

Sendai has three new professional sports teams, the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, and the Sendai 89ERS and Vegalta Sendai. Only four cities in Japan are home to professional soccer, baseball, and basketball teams - Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka and Sendai.

The Italian national soccer team, "Azzurri," held its training camp in Sendai during the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Its decision was based upon the city's outstanding accessibility, many training facilities, and excellent urban environment.

Coach Giovanni Trapattoni praised Sendai, remarking that it was like an Italian city, and that the hills and forests around the city reminded him of Tuscany.

World famous Italian players, such as Del Piero, Totti, and Cannavaro, as well as team staff members, were fascinated by Sendai and identified with the simple and friendly hospitality provided by its people.

Each player left their footprint and autograph at Sendai Stadium, which they used to practice, as a symbol of their friendship and gratitude. Their footprints are now cast in bronze and installed as a monument at the Azzuri Square beside the stadium. This was by no means the end of the sports relationships between Italy and Sendai.

Famous Italian soccer teams, such as AC Chievo Verona in 2003 and S.S. Lazio in 2004, visited Sendai and played exhibition matches with Vegalta Sendai.

Each year, U-18 youth teams from Europe, South America, and Asia, along with the national youth team from Japan, compete in the Sendai Cup International Youth Football Tournament. Experts throughout Japan come to Sendai for an opportunity to see these highly competitive teams before their own eyes as many of these young players become world class stars in the future.

Sendai is home to various competitive and exciting athletic events. Of course, Sendai offers more than world-class sports competitions. Sports are fun because people can play sports for entertainment, for competition, or to meet people, according to their competitive level. Additionally, there is yet another kind of fun: cooperating to support these sports activities behind the scenes. Sendai believes these different kinds of fun : are all part of the enormous value of sports, and continues to deliver a new sports culture.

Vegalta Sendai’s name comes from the Tanabata Festival, which celebrates the legend of the lover stars, Orihime (Vega, the weaver girl) and Hikoboshi (Altair, the cowherd). People say that Yurtec Stadium Sendai, their home venue, is under a spell. The spell is cast by the Vegalta supporters - the most enthusiastic and well-mannered fans in Japan that pack the stadium every game. The players are encouraged by this fan power, sometimes performing plays that can only be described as miraculous. Vegalta Sendai is the pinnacle of sports, with fans and players married to each other like Vega and Altair.

In 2004, the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles became the first expansion team in Japanese professional baseball in 50 years. The team base, Kleenex Stadium Miyagi, created a new wave of excitement with their close relationship to the local community and their focus on entertaining fans. The team's fans are diverse and its stadium has attracted men and women from all generations since the team's first season in 2005. A new style of baseball culture is now emerging in Sendai.

In 2004, the first professional basketball league (the BJ League), was created in Japan. The Sendai 89ERS play at the Sendai Gymnasium, their home venue, and fascinate the city with their dynamic and aggressive style of basketball. The cheerleaders for the Sendai 89ERS are famous for their ‘Genghis Khan Dance’ which gets Sendai’s fans energized and ready to support their beloved team.

Approximately 1000 runners, including many who are domestically and internationally prominent, race through Sendai amid enthusiastic cheers from spectators during the Sendai International Half Marathon. The competition is classed as an outstanding race and has become a qualification race for the World Half Marathon Championships.
