The Sendai City Transportation System will Change with the Opening of the Tozai Subway Line

The Tozai Subway Line will begin operation on December 6, 2015. Information on the new transportation system will be distributed at the Municipal Information Center on the 1st floor of Sendai City Hall, information desks at all ward offices, General Branch Offices, information centers in Miyagino Ward, Wakabayashi Ward, and Taihaku Ward. The information is also available on our official website at http://www.city.sendai.jp/sumiyo/kotsu/.

    We will run two more morning trains on weekdays. The interval between trains will be changed to 7.5 minutes in the daytime on weekdays, Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays. There is no change to other schedules.

The ‘icsca’ cards can be used on the Sendai City Subway Tozai Line and Sendai City Buses from December 6, 2015

  • ’icsca’ Card Usage
    • 1) Sendai Subway Namboku Line and Tozai Line

    • 3) Miyagi Transportation
    • 4) Miyakou Buses

  • ’icsca’User’s Guide
    The ’icsca’card is a pre-paid transportation card containing an IC chip that can be touched onto the card reader on ticket gates to pay fares. The card is rechargeable. The initial purchase price includes a \500 deposit. The deposit is returned in exchange for the card when it is no longer needed.
  • From December 6, 2015, The Only Commuter Passes Sold will be ‘icsca’ Ones
    ‘icsca’ commuter passes which are valid after the restructuring of bus routes and the opening of the Tozai line on December 6, 2015, will be purchasable from November 22, 2015. There are two types of Gakuto Sendai Student Pass currently available: one for subway use only and the combination pass for subway and bus use, however, this two will be expanded to include seven types of pass. For details on each pass, please contact below.
  • Where to purchase: At ticket offices
    On the new Tozai Subway Line, ticket offices are located at Yagiyama Zoological Park Station, Yakushido Station, and Arai Station.(There is also a ticket office for Miyagi Transportation at Yagiyama Zoological Park Station). Business hours and days vary depending on the ticket office, so please contact the ticket office directly.
  • If you have already purchased a commuter pass, and there is no change to said route from December 6, 2015, you can use it until the pass expires.(If route changes are applied, you must replace it with an Icsca commuter pass.)

The sale of magnetic transportation cards will end on December 5, 2015.
You can use magnetic transportation cards (skip card, joy card, bus card and mercy card) until October 31, 2016.

Now Taking Applications for Sendai City Childcare Facilities and Services for April 2016

  • Eligibility
    If your child is under the age of 3(born on April 2nd, 2013 or later), you can apply for the following facilities and services:
    Nursery Schools
    Center for early childhood education and care(nursery schools only)
    Small-scale childcare services
    Home-like childcare services
    Child care facilities for company employees
    If your child is age 3 or older(born between April 2nd, 2010 and April 1st, 2013), you can apply for the following facilities and services:
    Nursery Schools
    Center for early childhood education and care(nursery schools only)
    Center for early childhood education and care(kindergartens only)
    Kindergarten adapted for the new system
    Kindergarten adapted for the existing system

*If your child is age 3 or older(born between April 2nd, 2010 and April 1st, 2013), and you wish to use the following facilities, please apply directly to the facility:

  • Certification of Need for Childcare
    If parents in Sendai are unable to look after their children for any of the following reasons, they can receive childcare certification
    • You are working 64 hours or more per month.
    • You are pregnant or have just given birth, and look after your other children.
    • You become ill, are injured, or have a mental or physical disability.
    • You are providing care for other relatives in your home.
    • You are recovering from a disaster such as a fire, flood, or earthquake.
    • You are searching for a job(including job searches that begin after you begin to use childcare facilities or services).
    • You are attending school over 64 hours a month.
    • You are absolutely unable to look after your children for other reasons similar to those above.
  • Childcare Facilities and Services Availability Hours
    You will receive either of ‘Certification of Need for Standard Childcare’ or ‘Certification of Need for Limited Childcare’ based on your working hours, commuting times etc.. Childcare facilities and services availability hours vary depending on the type of certificate. Each facility sets its own hours of availability, generally from 7:00a.m. – 6:30p.m.. In general, those who receive the ‘Certification of Need for Standard Childcare’ can use facilities and services for a maximum of 11 hours per day, and those who receive the ‘Certification of Need for Limited Childcare’ can use them for a maximum of 8 hours per day. Each facility has its own extended hours for childcare and services with additional fees charged per hour.
  • Application
    • Application Period: Monday, November 9 - Wednesday, December 9, 2015
    • Where to apply: the Home Health Section of ward offices or the Health and Welfare Section of the Miyagi General Branch Office with jurisdiction over your first-choice childcare facility or service.
    • If you have already applied for Childcare Facilities and Services for FY2015, but have not been accepted and still wish to use childcare facilities and services from April, 2016, you must reapply.
    • Application packets are distributed at the Home Health Section of ward offices or the Health and Welfare Section of Miyagi General Branch Offices.   • Determination of Childcare Facilities and Services Usage
    After the screening process of applications and interviews, we will determine the admission for childcare facility or services based on our enrollment criteria. If a childcare facility or service receives more applications than the number of spaces available, the child in the greatest need of care will be given first priority for admission.
  • Childcare Fees
    Fees for using childcare facilities or services are determined based on the local inhabitant taxes paid by the child’s guardian(s). For nursery schools, fees will be deducted from your bank account.

BCG Vaccinations

  • Eligibility: Infants under the age of one(the standard age for BCG vaccinations is five to seven months old).
  • Things to bring: Maternal and Child Health(MCH) Handbook, BCG vaccination coupon from the MCH Handbook voucher packet(please fill out and detach)
  • Please wait at least 28 days after your child receives a live vaccine(such as polio) or seven days after your child receives an inactive vaccine(such as DPT-IPV)before having BCG vaccinations.
