Moving Guide

  • Large Quantity of Waste Due to Moving House
    You can’t put out bulky waste and /or large quantities of waste at household garbage collection points. Please dispose them in one of the following ways (fee-based). However, the four main household electric appliances (TV sets, refrigerators / freezers, air conditioners, washing machines / clothes dryers) and PCs are not collected by the city. For more details on how to dispose of them, please check our official website.
    1. Apply for Bulky Waste Collection (collection is done about once in every two weeks)

Ward Office Counters to Extend Office Hours From End of March till the Start of April

1. Sunday Counter open days

  • Days: March 25th (Sun.) - April 1st (Sun.)
  • Office hours: 9:00a.m - 3:00p.m
  • Offices: Family and Resident Registration Section and the National Health Insurance and Pension Sections of each ward office ※Excludes General Affairs branch

2. Weekday Extended Office Hours

  • Period: March 26th (Mon.) – April 4th (Mon.) (Weekdays only)
  • Office hours: 8:30a.m – 6:00p.m
  • Offices: Family and Resident Registration Section of each ward office, National Health Insurance and Pension Section, and the Sendai Station Service Center. (AER 5th floor, a part of the Family Registration Section, Aoba Ward Office)
    ※General Affairs branches will continue its regular hours (until 5:00p.m.)
    ※Mondays or the day after a national holiday are particularly busy, office hours would be form 10:00a.m – 3:00p.m.

The Timetable and Routes for Sendai City Buses Will Change on April 1st

Please check the new route and timetable on distributed from March 16th (Fri.) or on the Transportation Bureau’s official website at http://www.kotsu.city.sendai.jp/. If you would like to receive new timetables by fax or by post, please contact the Transportation Bureau Information Center.

  • Distribution of New Timetables
    New timetables will be distributed at Transportation Bureau ticket centers, bus operations offices, and ward office information desks.

Water & Sewage Fee Exemption in FY2018 for Households on Welfare and Households on Welfare for Japanese War Orphans who Returned From China

  • Reduction Period: From the month following application to March 2019
  • Amount of Reduction: Exemption from basic fees for water and all fees (basic and usage fees) for sewage.
  • If you apply to receive the reduction for the first time, or have been receiving the reduction but have not submitted a letter of consent, please visit the Public Assistance Section of your local ward office for applications.
  • Depending on the type of building you reside in, you may not be eligible for these exemptions.

The Deadline to Apply for Municipal Housing is March 16th

  • The Application Guide for Sendai City Municipal Housing will be available from March 6th (Tue.) at the following locations:
    ・Application Section of Sendai City Construction Corporation, Sendai City Hall Kokubuncho Building 2F
    ・Shimin-no-heya, Sendai City Hall 1F
    ・Ward Office Information Desks
    ・General Branch Offices
    ・Sendai Station Service Center, AER 5F (part of the Family Registration Section, Aoba Ward Office)
    ・Certificate Issuance Center
    ・Chuo Shimin Center (Civic Center) in each ward
    ・Lifelong Learning Center
    ・Miyagi Housing Construction Center
    ・Municipal Housing Management Office
  • How to Apply: Choose one municipal housing unit from the form, fill out the application form attached to the application packet and post it in the provided envelope by March 16th. In the event that there are more applications than available housing, applications will be chosen by lottery.
  • Earliest Move-in Date: May 25th (Fri.) (tentative)
  • For further information, including number of available units, rent and eligibility, please see the application guide or contact for details.
    Applications from those who lost their houses in the Great East Japan Earthquake, and victims of domestic violence etc. may be subject to different conditions in regards to application eligibility.

Japanese Language Lesson Notice

These lessons are provided by Japanese citizen volunteers for foreign residents living in Sendai. Knowledge of the Japanese language is important for foreign residents to live safely and securely in Japan. If you have any foreign friends, be sure to let them know about these lessons.
1. Sendai Japanese Classroom
Term period: April 10th – September 14th (There will be a test to determine class levels on April 6th (Fri.) starting at 9:30a.m.)
Lesson days: Tuesday –Friday (differs between classes)
Location: Aoba Chuo Shimin Center (2-1-4 Ichibancho, Aoba-ku)

2. Nihongo Tearoom- for foreign residents living in Sendai
Lesson Day and Time: Every Wednesday and Friday 10:00a.m.-11:30a.m.
Location: Yagiyama Shimin Center (1-43 Yagiyama-honcho, Taihaku-ku)

BCG Vaccinations

  • Eligibility: Infants under the age of one (the standard age for BCG vaccinations is five to seven months old).
  • Things to bring: Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Handbook, BCG vaccination coupon from the MCH Handbook voucher packet (please fill out and detach)
  • Please wait at least 28 days after your child receives a live vaccine, or 7 days after your child receives an inactive vaccine (such as DPT-IPV) before having BCG vaccinations
