Enroll in the National Pension program when you turn 20 years old

For individuals that turn 20 years old and do not enroll in an employee pension or mutual pension program, please enroll in the national pension program.

The national pension program provides for the policy holder when they are of advanced age or if they become disabled; in the event of the death of the policy holder, family members will be provided for as well. Pension fee reductions are available for those having difficulty making fee payments, for more details please contact the following offices.

Do you know that there are health checkups for certain age groups?

These health checks are available until January 31st(Thurs.). If you have not had your checkup yet, you are advised to do so as soon as possible.

  • Eligibility: Those enrolled in national health insurance and aged 40 to 74(as of March 31, 2013)
  • Things to bring: coupon for the checkup and your national health insurance card
  • The checkup can be received at participating medical institutions.
  • Those not enrolled in the national health insurance program cannot receive a check up.
  •  If you do not have a coupon, you can have it reissued at the ward office or general branch office in your area of residence. Do not forget to bring your national health insurance card.

Accepting applications for municipal housing(Deadline: January 16)

Sendai City is now accepting applications for municipal housing.

  • The application packet is available at the following locations:
    Sendai City Construction Public Corporation, 2nd floor of the Kokubuncho Office of the City of Sendai
    Shimin-no-heya, 1st Floor of Sendai City Hall
    Information Desk at all Ward Offices
    General Branch Offices
    Sendai Station Service Center of the Family Registration Section, Aoba Ward Office

    Chuo-shimin Center in each ward
    Miyagi Housing Construction Center
    Municipal Housing Management Office
  • Application Procedure: Fill out the application form attached to the application packet and mail it in the provided envelope by January 16.
  • Possible Move-in Date: March 27(tentative)
  • Eligibility: For those who meet the following criteria
    • 1) Have difficulties finding a place to live
    • 2) Have preschool children(born after April 2, 2006)
    • 3) Commute to Sendai or reside in Sendai
    • 4) Monthly household income is 214,000 yen or less. Please see the application packet for more details regarding how to calculate household income.
    • 5) Have not missed any municipal tax payments.
    • 6) Not be a member of any organized crime groups(Boryokudan)
      *including those who you currently live with
    • 7) Meet other criteria

Relaxed application criteria for those who lost their homes in the disaster

  • Who is eligible: Those who lost their homes in the disaster and were living in areas targeted by the Special Measures for the Recovery of Disaster-Affected Urban Districts Act.
  • Relaxed criteria: Do not need to have an address or workplace in the city. No income limit.

Precautions for influenza and infectious gastroenteritis

At this time of year, the airborne viral load increases due to dry and cold weather. At the same time your body’s defense mechanisms, mucous membranes in the nose and throat, weaken which increases the likelihood of contracting a virus. In order to help prevent contracting a virus, get adequate sleep, nutrition, and exercise, be healthy, and boost immune function.

*Tips for influenza prevention

  • Wash hands and gargle
  • Keep the humidity level around 50% or 60% inside the house.
  • Try to wear a mask(non-woven fabric cloth is effective)when going out in crowded places.

*Tips for gastroenteritis prevention

  • Wash hands as frequently as possible
  • Wear a mask and plastic gloves when cleaning up diarrhea or vomit and do not touch them directly.

※If you feel you are symptomatic for a viral infection, schedule a visit with a medical institutions.

Taking applications for kids club members

The Kid’s Club after-school day-care center is now taking applications for first to third graders whose parents or guardians are unable to take care of them after school due to work or other related reasons. Through various activities and games, we try to encourage their mental and physical development. You can find detailed information such as enrollment limits in the Shiseidayori and directly contact each center if needed.

  • Fee: 3,000 yen/ month(fee deductions are available for low income households)
    If you wish to use extended services from 6:00 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., you will be asked to pay a 1,000 yen per month extra fee. Please note that you may be asked to pay for snack and insurance fees at some centers.
  • Application Period:January 15, 2013 - February 2, 2013 *except Sundays
    9:00a.m. - 6:00p.m.(9:00a.m.-5:00p.m. for Saturdays)
  • How to Apply:Please go directly to the after-school day-care center where you wish to enroll
  • Applications are distributed at each after-school day-care center. You can also download the applications from Sendai City’s official website.
  • Things to bring: work certificate(employment certificate)
  • Your application may not be accepted if we receive a great number of applications.
  • The Kid’s Club after- school day-care center may be established at locations other than children' centers.
  • If there are spots available after the application period, applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.


  • Eligibility: Children under six months of age and under(recommended age: three months and over)
    *In cases where vaccination before six months of age is deemed inadvisable due to fever or other medical reasons, Sendai City provides for free vaccinations up to one year of age.
  • Things to bring: Mother and Child Health Handbook, BCG vaccination coupon from Mother and Child Health Handbook(fill out and detach)
  • Please wait 28 days after your child receives a live vaccine(polio or other)and seven days after your child receives an inactive vaccine(such as DPT)for BCG vaccinations.
  • BCG vaccinations may be received outside your ward of residence. For details, please contact:
