SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS AND FEATURE EXHIBITIONS FOR 2011

Period of Exhibition： February 10 (Thursday) ～ May 8 (Sunday), 2011

In the year 79 A.D., the ancient city of Pompeii was buried in the cataclysmic volcanic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. Though the city was destroyed, many artifacts of its culture and achievements were preserved in the ashes.
With the full cooperation of the Naples National Archaeological Museum, this exhibit features 250 valuable artifacts and art pieces from its collection. Of special interest are the collection of silver artifacts, shown outside of Italy for the first time, and the bathtub and water heating system excavated from a summer home on the outskirts of Pompeii as well as the mosaic art found on the floor section of the bathroom.

Founded in 1961, the Sendai City Museum is celebrating its 50^th anniversary this year. Over the years, the Museum has accumulated a large number of historical documents and works of art through donations as well as purchases. This exhibition displays some of the highlights from our collection.

Period of Exhibition： November 1 (Tuesday) ～ December 11 (Sunday), 2011

Since ancient times, the Sendai Plain and surrounding areas have been known for its numerous temples and shrines that house a wide variety of statues. This exhibit displays Buddhist statues revered by people through the ages as well as statues of actual historical figures and sculptures, thus giving visitors an opportunity to reexamine the rich history and culture of the region.
