Sendai After-Hours Children’s Emergency Clinic Has Begun Accepting Patients

On Sunday, November 2nd, Sendai Emergency Medical Care Center(Address: 64-12 Funacho, Wakabayashi-ku)closed its pediatrics department and Sendai After-Hours Children’s Emergency Clinic (Address: 1-1-1 Asuto Nagamachi, Taihaku-ku)began accepting patients in its place.

Do Not Forget Your Citizens’ Health Check-up

Additional applications for city-organized Citizens’ Health Check-ups for the following must be submitted by November 28th: basic check-ups and tests for stomach cancer, cervical cancer, breast cancer, and bowel cancer.

Beware of Norovirus!

Many people contract norovirus during the winter months every year.

Test for Viral Hepatitis are Available Free of Charge

Blood tests are recommended to help with the early detection and treatment of viral hepatitis.

  • Period: Until March 31, 2015
  • Eligibility: Those who have never had a test for hepatitis viruses before.
  • Tests: hepatitis B & C viruses
  • Things to Bring: Health Insurance Card

Applications for Childcare Will Soon be Accepted

We will soon begin accepting applications for enrollment in childcare facilities for FY 2015(April 2015 to March 2016)in accordance with the New Support System for Children and Child-Rearing.

Facilities and projects covered by the new system
If you wish to apply for childcare service, the following facilities/projects are available under the New Support System for Children and Child-Rearing, which is scheduled to start from April 2015:
Nursery Schools
Centers for Early Childhood Education and Care(nursery school division)
Small-Scale Nursery Projects(only for children under the age of three.)
Childcare Moms(Homelike Environment Nursery Projects only for children under the age of three.)

Eligibility Criteria
Childcare under the support system is provided to children with parents or guardians living in Sendai City who require childcare for their child(ren) due to any of the reasons listed below.
The child’s parents or guardians:

  • work during the day.
  • are in the two month period before or after childbirth and unable to take care of their older child(ren).
  • are suffering from an illness, injury, or mental or physical disability.
  • are providing round-the-clock care for other family members.
  • are studying at a school
  • are searching for a job(there is a limit on the period childcare is provided).
  • are repairing their house after fire, storm, flood or earthquake damage.
  • require childcare for their children due to circumstances similar to those stated above.

Childcare hours
Sendai City will certify the applicant’s eligibility for either ‘regular childcare time’ or ‘short childcare time’ based on the guardian’s working hours or other conditions. The time at which childcare is available vary depending on the certified childcare time. Specific time slots are set by each childcare facility. Time slots for regular childcare time(maximum 11 hours per day)and short childcare time(maximum 8 hours per day)are set roughly between 7 a.m. and 6 :30p.m.
In addition, there are some facilities which provide extended childcare of over 1 hour(paid for separately).

How to apply
Application Period: November 10(Mon) – December 9(Tue)
Where to apply : Home Health Section of the Ward Office under whose jurisdiction your first-choice nursery school falls, or the Public Health and Welfare Section of Miyagi General Branch Office
*If you have already applied this fiscal year, have not been able to enroll your child in a nursery school, but still wish to enroll your child, you must reapply for FY2015.

Admission is decided by examining the documents submitted and through interview. Children are admitted in order of the urgency of the need for care and according to the number of openings at nursery schools. For nursery schools, applicants will receive written notices of admission from Sendai City and which will act as proof that your child’s admission has been decided. For other facilities or projects, after receiving the written notice from Sendai City, you must directly contact the facility in which you wish to enroll your child in and sign up with using said notice.

Childcare Fees
Childcare fee will be set based on the Resident Tax paid by the child’s parents or guardians.
For enrollment in nursery schools as a rule, you are required to pay the childcare fee by bank transfer. Other childcare facilities must be paid directly.
If you wish to enroll your child in a kindergarten, please apply to said kindergarten directly as before.
Please apply for enrollment in Sendai Nursery Rooms which will not switch over the new system as of April 2015 and other non-registered nursery facilities directly as before.

BCG Vaccinations

  • Eligibility: Infants under the age of one
    (the standard age for BCG vaccinations is five to seven months old).
  • Things to bring: Maternal and Child Health(MCH)Handbook, BCG vaccination coupon from the MCH Handbook voucher packet(please fill out and detach)
  • Please wait at least 28 days after your child receives a live vaccine(such as polio)or seven days after your child receives an inactive vaccine(such as DPT-IPV)before having BCG vaccinations.
