Moving Guide

○A large quantity of waste due to house moving

You can’t put out bulky waste and or large quantities of waste at household garbage collection points. Please dispose them in one of the following ways (all charged). However, the four main household electric appliances (TV sets, refrigerators / freezers, air conditioners, washing machines / clothes dryers) and PCs are not collected by the city. For more details on how to dispose of them, please check our official website, or directly contact the collection office of the ward in which you reside or the Waste Supervision Section.
1. Apply for Bulky Waste Collection (collection is done about once in every two weeks)

2. Apply for Collection of Large Quantities of Waste (Including Bulky Waste)

3. Bring waste in yourself

○Handling Office for Procedures Related to Moving In/Out Notices, Medical Expenses Subsidies, and Motorized Bicycles

Ward Office Counters to Extend Office Hours During the House Moving Season

The period from late March to early April is the peak season for ward offices with many people trying to file changes in residence registration due to moving in or moving out. The counters of sections that handle address changes in each ward office will extend their opening hours during the period mentioned below in order to ease crowding and to shorten waiting time.

  • Period: March 21st (Tue.) - April 4th (Tue.) (excluding Saturdays & Sundays)
  • Office hours: 8:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.
    (Please come as early as possible as it may take time to complete necessary procedures.)
  • Offices: Family and Resident Registration Section of each ward office and Sendai Station Service Center (AER 5th floor, part of the Family Registration Section, Aoba Ward Office)

The Timetable for Sendai City Buses Will Change on April 1st

Please check the new timetable at bus stops or on the Transportation Bureau’s official website at http://www.kotsu.city.sendai.jp/ after March 24th (Fri.).

  • Distribution of New Timetables
    New timetables will be distributed at Transportation Bureau ticket centers, bus operations offices, and ward office information desks from March 24th (Fri.). 
    If you would like to receive new timetables by fax or by post, please contact the Transportation Bureau Information Center.

Water & Sewage Fee Exemption in FY2017 for Households on Welfare and Households on Welfare for Japanese War Orphans who Returned From China

  • Reduction Period: From the month following application to March 2018
  • Amount of Reduction: Exemption from basic fees for water and all fees (basic and usage fees) for sewage.
  • Ifyou apply to receive the reduction for the first time, or have been receiving the reduction but have not submitted a letter of consent, please bring your seal and visit the Public Assistance Section of your local ward office for applications by 31st March 2017.
  • Depending on the type of building you reside in, you may not be eligible for these exemptions.

The Deadline to Apply for Municipal Housing is March 16th

  • The Application Guide for Sendai City Municipal Housing will be available from March 6th at the following locations:
    ・Application Section of Sendai City Construction Corporation, Sendai City Hall Kokubuncho Building 2F
    ・Shimin-no-heya, Sendai City Hall 1F
    ・Ward Office Information Desks
    ・General Branch Offices
    ・Sendai Station Service Center, AER 5F (part of the Family Registration Section, Aoba Ward Office)
    ・Certificate Issuance Center
    ・Chuo Shimin Center (Civic Center) in each ward
    ・Miyagi Housing Construction Center
    ・Municipal Housing Management Office
  • How to Apply: Choose one municipal housing unit, fill out the application form attached to the application packet and post it in the provided envelope by March 16th. In the event that there are more applications than available housing, applications will be chosen by lottery.
  • Earliest Move-in Date: May 26th (tentative)

◆For further information, including number of available units, rent and eligibility, please see the application guide or contact for details.
Applications from those who lost their houses in the Great East Japan Earthquake, those from the restricted habitation area designated in the Act on Special Measures for the Rebirth of Fukushima, and also evacuees who resided in the Disaster Assistance Area outlined in the Child Victims’ Support Law, are also accepted, but differ in requirements.
