Centralization of Consultation Services for Non-Japanese Residents -Sendai Multicultural Center Opens-

On June 1st the Sendai International Center Koryu Corner expanded their services and started operations as the Sendai Multicultural Center. As a centralized consultation service for non-Japanese residents, the center is able to cater to wide range of consultation needs, while also offering various kinds of information useful for daily life.

At the Sendai Multicultural Center foreign language consultation advisors has increased from the usual English, Chinese, with the newly added Korean, Vietnamese and Nepali. An Automatic translation device which covers 74 languages, is also available.The center has also received the cooperation of the Sendai Regional Immigration Bureau and the Miyagi Administrative Scriveners Association to provide consultations by appointment, for matters related to residency status, labor, laws, and administrative procedures.

In addition to these services, booklets such as “Life in Sendai” and other multilingual pamphlets which provide useful information for living in Sendai are available along with information on moving procedures and hospitals and clinics which provide appointments in foreign languages etc.

The center hopes to as a member of local society, support non-Japanese residents in living a secure life.

119 Handles Calls in Foreign Languages

119 (Fire and Emergency Services) are able to handle calls in foreign languages(17 languages) through a three-way call interpreting service 24 hours a day.

Languages available: English, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, French, Vietnamese etc. Please contact us for detailed information.

Please Don’t Forget to Apply for a Reduction of National Pension Payments

If you have difficulty making National Pension payments for financial reasons, you can apply for complete exemption or reduction of payments (your income will be audited and you will be assigned to one of four tiers based on your income in the previous year).

Now Accepting Applications for Municipal Housing for Single Parents/Households with Child(ren) -Application Deadline: July 16th-

  • The application packet will be distributed from July 5th(Fri.) at the following places:

Application Section of Sendai City Construction Corporation (Sendai City Hall Kokubuncho Office 2F), Shimin-no-heya, Sendai City Hall 1F, General Information Desk of all ward offices, General Branch Offices, Sendai Station Service Center of the Family Registration Section, Aoba Ward Office (AER 5F),
Certificate Issuance Center, Chuo-shimin Center of any ward, Lifelong Learning Promotion Center, etc.

  • How to apply:Choose the unit you wish to apply for, fill out the application form attached to the application packet and, using the provided envelope, sendin the form by mail by July 16th. In the event that there are more applications than available housing, applications will be chosen by lottery.
  • Move-in date:September 21st(Sat.)(tentative)
  • Eligibility:Those who meet all the following conditions
  1. Those that have difficulty finding a place to live.
  2. Applicant must be dependent of a child under 20 years old or households with preschool children (born on and after April 2, 2013).
  3. Those that reside in Sendai or commute to Sendai.

Beware of Black Bears

As we move into the summer season, chances of encountering black bears are higher as they close in on human habituated areas to gather food when their food sources in the forest becomes scarce. If you plan on going hiking during this season, stay aware of your surrounding and the actions and movement of bears and take appropriate precautions to keep yourself safe.

BCG Vaccinations

  • Eligibility:BCG vaccinations are given to children under one year of age. (The standard age for BCG vaccinations is five to seven months old.)
  • Things to bring: Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Handbook, BCG vaccination coupon from the MCH Handbook voucher packet (please fill out and detach)
  • Please wait at least 28 days after your child receives a live vaccine (such as polio) or seven days after your child receives an inactive vaccine (such as DPT-IPV) for BCG vaccinations.

A new Alert Level has been added to evacuation information during times of heavy rain

There has been a change to the way in which flood and landslide disaster prevention informationis communicated.

In addition to evacuation information given out during heavy rain, such as evacuation advisories and disaster occurrence information, a new 5-level alert system has been added which will inform people as to when they should evacuate. Alert Levels 1 and 2 will be announced by the Japan Meteorological Agency and Alert Levels 3 through 5 will be announced by the City along with other evacuation information. Make sure to take appropriate evacuation measures based on the Alert Level.

【Urgency increases from levels 1 to 5】

  • Alert Level 1:Pay attention to the latest weather information.
  • Alert Level 2:Confirm evacuation routes and centers.
  • Alert Level 3 【Evacuation of the elderly and persons requiring assistance】

Evacuation Preparation and beginning of evacuation for the elderly and certain other groups:Announced when a disaster is predicted, asking people to prepare for evacuation.

  • Alert Level 4【Full evacuation】

Evacuation Advisory:Announced in order to urge people to evacuate when there is the concern that a disaster will occur.

Evacuation Order(emergency):Announced during an emergency or when additional evacuation announcements are given.

  • Alert Level 5

Disaster Occurrence Information:Announced when it is assessed that a disaster has already occurred.
