Moving Guide

Large Quantity of Waste Due to Moving House

You can’t put out bulky waste and or large quantities of waste at household garbage collection points. Please dispose them in one of the following ways (fee-based). However, the four main household electric appliances (TV sets, refrigerators / freezers, air conditioners, washing machines / clothes dryers) and PCs are not collected by the city. For more details on how to dispose of them, please check our official website.

1. Apply for Bulky Waste Collection (collection is done about once in every two weeks)

2. Apply for Collection of Large Quantities of Waste (Including Bulky Waste)

Water & Sewage Fee Exemption in FY2020

  • Reduction Period: From the month following application to March 2021
  • Eligibility: Households on welfare and households on welfare for Japanese war orphans who returned from China.
  • Amount of Reduction: Exemption from basic fees for water and all fees (basic and usage fees) for sewage.
  • If you apply to receive the reduction for the first time, or have been receiving the reduction but have not submitted a letter of consent, please visit the Public Assistance Section of your local Ward Office or the Administration Section of Miyagi General Branch Office for applications.
  • Depending on the type of building you reside in, you may not be eligible for these exemptions.

The Timetable for Sendai City Buses Will Change on April 1st

Please check the new timetable at bus stops from March 18th (Wed.).You can also find them on the Transportation Bureau’s official website at (http://www.kotsu.city.sendai.jp/(External Link)). To make an enquiry or if you would like to receive the new timetables, please contact the Transportation Bureau Information Center.

Japanese Language Lesson Notice

These lessons are provided by Japanese citizen volunteers for foreign residents living in Sendai. Knowledge of the Japanese language is important for foreign residents to live safely and securely in Japan. If you have any foreign friends, be sure to let them know about these lessons.

1. Sendai Japanese Classroom

  • Term period: April 7th – September 11th (There will be a test to determine class levels on April 3rd (Fri.) starting at 9:30a.m.)
  • Lesson days: Tue.–Fri. (differs between classes)
  • Location: Aoba Shimin Center (2-1-4 Ichibancho, Aoba-ku)
  • Classes: Beginner, intermediate, conversation, kanji etc.
  • Textbook costs to be covered by the student

2. Nihongo Tearoom- for foreign residents living in Sendai (daycare services available)

  • Lesson Day and Time: Every Wed. and Fri. 10:00a.m.-11:30a.m.
  • Location: Yagiyama Shimin Center (1-43 Yagiyama-honcho, Taihaku-ku)
  • Classes: beginner, novice, intermediate, advanced
  • Please contact the Shimin Center in advance if you wish to participate

3. Nihongo-no-Mori (Local Japanese Classroom)

  • Lesson Day and Time: Every Tue. and Fri. 1:00p.m.-3:00p.m.
  • Location: Sendai Multicultural Center Lecture Rooms (Aobayama, Aoba Ward)
  • Reservations are not required; you can go directly to the venue on the day.

The Deadline to Apply for Municipal Housing is March 16th

  • The Application Guide for Sendai City Municipal Housing will be available from March 6th (Fri.) at the following locations:

  • How to Apply: Choose one municipal housing unit from the form, fill out the application form attached to the application packet and post it in the provided envelope by March 16th. In the event that there are more applications than available housing, applications will be chosen by lottery.
  • Earliest Move-in Date: July 15th (Wed.) (tentative)
  • For further information, including number of available units, rent and eligibility, please see the application guide or contact for details.
    Applications from those who lost their houses in the Great East Japan Earthquake, and victims of domestic violence etc. may be subject to different conditions in regards to application eligibility.

BCG Vaccinations

  • Eligibility: Infants under the age of one (the standard age for BCG vaccinations is five to seven months old).
  • Things to bring: Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Handbook, BCG vaccination coupon from the MCH Handbook voucher packet (please fill out and detach)
  • Please wait at least 28 days after your child receives a live vaccine (such as polio) or seven days after your child receives an inactive vaccine (such as DPT-IPV) before having BCG vaccinations.
  • Please go directly to the vaccination site.
  • The BCG vaccination may be received outside your ward of residence. Please contact ward offices for details.
