Large Quantities of Waste Due to Moving House

You can’t put out bulky waste and or large quantities of waste at household garbage collection points. Please dispose them in one of the following ways (fee-based). However, the four main household electric appliances (TV sets, refrigerators / freezers, air conditioners, washing machines / clothes dryers) and PCs are not collected by the city. Formore details on how to dispose of them, please check the official City of Sendai website.

1. Apply for Bulky Waste Collection (Collection is done about once every two weeks)

2. Apply for Collection of Large Quantities of Waste (Including Bulky Waste)

Ward Office Counters to Open Sundays and also Extend Weekdays’ Office Hours to 6 p.m.

2. Weekday Extended Office Hours

  • Period: March 22nd(Mon.) –April 5th(Mon.) (Weekdays only)
  • Office hours: 8:30 a.m – 6 p.m

(General Branch Offices will continue their regular hours (until 5 p.m.)

※The busiest time period is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is expected that offices will be most crowded on March 22nd(Mon.), 29th(Mon.), and April 1st(Thu.).

The Timetable for Sendai City Buses Will Change on April 1st

Please check the new timetable at bus stops from March 18th (Thu.). The new timetable is available to view on the Transportation Bureau’s official website at (http://www.kotsu.city.sendai.jp/) (those who wish to receive the time table by post or FAX should inquire to the Transportation Bureau Information Center.

  • Distribution of New Timetables

New timetables will be distributed at Transportation Bureau ticket centers, Sendai City bus operations offices, and Ward Office information desks.

Water & Sewage Fee Exemption in FY2021

  • Reduction Period: From the month following application to March 2022
  • Eligibility: Households on welfare and households on welfare for Japanese war orphans who returned from China.
  • Amount of Reduction: Exemption from basic fees for water and all fees (basic and usage fees) for sewage.
  • If you apply to receive the reduction for the first time, or have been receiving the reduction but have not submitted a letter of consent, please visit the Public Assistance Section of your local Ward Office or the Administration Section of Miyagi General Branch Office for applications.
  • Depending on the type of building you reside in, you may not be eligible for these exemptions.

Inhabitants’ Tax Declaration Due by April 15th(Thu.)

1. If declaring before March 15th(Mon.): Declaration can be made at the declaration venues located in Ward Offices and General Branch Offices.

2. If declaring from March 16th(Tue.) to April 15th(Thu.): Declarations can be made at the 9th Floor of Aoba Ward Office or the 5th floor of the City Hall North Building.

  • Please send declarations by post when possible, to prevent the spread of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).
  • There may be some contents not reflected in the initial part of the fiscal year tax calculations, if a inhabitants tax declaration is submitted after March 16th. Additionally, as premiums are fixed by the information provided from inhabitants’ tax, this may have an effect on the premiums of National Health Insurance and Nursing Insurance. Please submit tax declarations as soon as possible.

The Deadline to Apply for Municipal Housing is March 16th

  • The Application Guide for Sendai City Municipal Housing will be available from March 5th(Fri.) at the following locations:

  •  How to Apply: Choose one municipal housing unit from the form, fill out the application form attached to the application packet and post it in the provided envelope by March 16th. In the event that there are more applications than available housing, applications will be chosen by lottery.
  • Who can apply: Those who satisfy the following conditions may apply: 1.Have problems in their current household 2. are either living with or are planning to move in with a relative 3. Are currently living or working in Sendai City. There are other conditions which must be met such as having a low income.
  • Earliest Move-in Date: May 28th(Wed.) (tentative)
  • For further information, please refer to the application guide or contact for details.

Applications fromthose who lost their houses in the Great East Japan Earthquake, and victims of domestic violence etc. may be subject to different conditions in regards to application eligibility.
