New rules for bicycling have been set due to the amendment of the Road Traffic Act

New rules for bicycling have set effective December 1st due to a partial amendment of the Road Traffic Act. Here are the main rules newly set:

  • When riding in the pedestrian lane, you must ride on the left-hand side of the street.
    Please reconfirm the pedestrian lanes where you may bicycle
  • Regulation of bicycles without brakes has been strengthened.

Riders of bicycles which are deemed dangerous because they lack adequate brakes may be asked by the police to stop for an inspection. If the bicycle is deemed dangerous, you may be ordered to fix the brakes or not ride your bicycle.

Please use the High-Cost Medical Care Benefit System

Under the National Health Insurance System and the Medical Care System for Elderly in the Latter Stage of Life, the monthly burden of an individual or household’s medical care expenses is limited to a pre-determined maximum amount. On application, the amount exceeding the maximum limit will be reimbursed by the insurer as a high-cost medical care benefit. If you are eligible for reimbursement for high-cost medical care, you will receive a notice of your reimbursement about 3 months after receiving the treatment. Please keep your hospital receipts as they are necessary to claim the reimbursement.

Beware of Norovirus!

Many people contract Norovirus during the winter months each year.
Try to avoid contracting Norovirus by washing your hands before cooking and cooking food thoroughly before eating.

Pamphlets on how to avoid contracting Norovirus at home are available at the Administration Section or Sanitary Section of the Public Health and Welfare Center of each Ward Office.

City Services During the Year-End and New Year

City services, except these services mentioned below, are scheduled to be closed from December 29 (Sun.) to January 3(Fri.). As ward offices and other service counters are usually crowded before and after this period every year, we recommend that you come early to avoid the peak period.

Ward Offices

Each ward office and General Branch Office will providing the following services at the security room on a 24-hour basis(8:30a.m. – 8:00p.m. for Akiu General Branch Office)from Dec. 29(Sun.)to Jan. 3 (Fri.):

  • Acceptance of notifications regarding family registers such as reports of marriage and reports of death.
  • Issuance of the burial and cremation authorizations.

City Buses/Subway

Timetables and business hours for ticket counters, the Information Center and the Lost & Found Center will be changed during the Year-End and New Year. Applications for Nursery School Enrollment (for FY 2014)

<How to apply>

  • Application Period: Dec. 2 - 27(excluding weekends and holidays)
  • Where to apply: Home Health Section of the Ward Office under whose jurisdiction your first-choice nursery school falls.
  • For an outline of all nursery schools, please refer to the Nursery School List available at the Home Health Section of each Ward Office and the Public Health and Welfare Section of the Miyagi General Branch Office.
  • If you have already applied but have not been able to enroll your child in a nursery school and still wish to enroll your child you must reapply for FY2014.

The application form is available at the Home Health Section of each Ward Office and the Public Health and Welfare Section of the Miyagi General Branch Office. You can also download the application form from Sendai City’s official website.

Deadline to Apply for Municipal Housing is December 16

  • The Application Guide for Sendai City Municipal Housing will be available from December 6 at the following locations:

    Information Desk of each Ward Office

  • How to apply: Choose one municipal housing unit, fill out the application form attached to the application packet and mail it in the provided envelope by December 16th. In the event that there are more applications than available housing, applications will be chosen by lottery.
  • Earliest move-in date: February 24th(tentative)

Safety precautions for winter driving

To all drivers
Have you replaced the tires of your car with winter tires? It is important for safe driving in winter to slow your speed by 10%, keep twice the distance between cars and depart 3 minutes earlier than usual in addition to checking information on road conditions.

BCG Vaccinations

  • Eligibility: BCG vaccinations are given to children under one year of age
    (standard age for BCG Vaccinations is five to seven months old).
  • Things to bring: Mother and Child Health Handbook(MCH), BCG vaccination coupon from the MCH voucher packet(please fill out and detach)
  • Please wait at least 28 days after your child receives a live vaccine (such as polio)or seven days after your child receives an inactive vaccine(such as DPT)for BCG vaccinations.
  • Please go directly to the vaccination site.
  • BCG vaccinations may be received outside your ward of residence. For details, please contact:
