Reduction of National Health Insurance Premiums

There is a system for reduction of national health insurance premiums for households whose total income is below a certain threshold. If your national health insurance premiums were reduced last fiscal year and you do not know your household's total income for last fiscal year, Sendai City will send you a declaration form in the middle of May that must be submitted by the end of the month.

Same-Day HIV Testing

Testing is the only way to know if you have contracted HIV(AIDS). Sendai City is conducting anonymous HIV tests with same-day results.

  • Date: June 1, 2013(Sat.)
  • Hours: 1:00-5:00 p.m.
  • Place: Aoba Ward Office 2F
  • Capacity: 130 people(first-come, first-served basis)
  • Please get tested at least 12 weeks after you suspect you may have contracted HIV.
  • Please report directly to the testing area.

Tax Information

FY2013 prefectural and municipal inhabitant tax certificates and tax exemption certificates will be issued by the municipality in which you resided on January 1, 2013. Certificates will be issued from May 15th for those whose prefectural and municipal inhabitant taxes are withheld from their monthly salaries and those who are tax exempt, and from June 14th for those who use tax payment slips and those whose taxes are withheld from their national pension.

Citizens' Health Examinations

We are still accepting applications for citizens' health examinations in case you just moved to Sendai or forgot to apply earlier. Please apply by sending in the postcard from the Citizens' Health Examination Application Guide as soon as possible.

  • The Citizens' Health Examination Application Guide is distributed at the general information counter of each Ward Office and at citizens' centers in each ward.
  • Those who are unable to take the following screenings at their place of employment may take citizens' health examinations: lung cancer, tuberculosis, stomach cancer, uterus cancer, breast cancer, and colon cancer.

Safe Bicycling Manners and Rules

Many people use bicycles as a convenient means of transportation. However, if bicyclists do not have good manners and follow traffic rules, accidents can occur. Please observe the following rules and ride safely.

  • Bicyclists should use the road; pedestrians should use the sidewalk.
  • Ride on the left side of the street.
  • Yield to pedestrians and ride carefully.
  • Riding under the influence of alcohol, riding two to a bike, and riding two abreast are prohibited.
  • At night, turn on your light and put reflectors on the sides of your bicycle.
  • At intersections, obey traffic lights and stop and check for oncoming vehicles.
  • Children must wear a helmet.

-The following acts are prohibited within Miyagi prefecture-

  • Riding while holding an umbrella, using a cellular phone, holding a bag or hanging a bag from the handlebars.
  • Riding while listing to music at a high volume.


  • Eligibility: Children six months of age and under(recommended age: three months and over)
    *In cases where vaccination before six months of age is deemed inadvisable due to fever or other medical reasons, Sendai City provides for free vaccinations up to one year of age.
  • Things to bring: Mother and Child Health Handbook, BCG vaccination coupon from Mother and Child Health Handbook(fill out and detach)
  • Please wait 28 days after your child receives a live vaccine(polio or other)or seven days after your child receives an inactive vaccine(such as DPT)for BCG vaccinations.
