Feature Exhibition

The Kanbun Incident: Political Turmoil in the Sendai-Han

Duration: April 20 (Fri) to June 10(Sun), 2012

Through records and testimonies of people involved, this exhibition examines the facts and consequences of the Kanbun Incident, the infamous internal squabble within the Date clan, who ruled the Sendai Domain. The exhibition traces the outcome of the historic sword fight and the fate of survivors, and also looks at the incident as represented in later literature and drama.

The Inca Empire Revealed: Century after the Machu Picchu "Discovery"

Duration: July 6 (Fri) to September 9 (Sun), 2012

The Inca Empire, which flourished between early 15th and 16th centuries, was the last nation of the Andean civilizations. This exhibition unravels the mysteries surrounding the empire's prosperity and demise from the perspectives of archaeology, anthropology and history, through a diverse range of exhibits including archaeological materials, paintings and textiles.

Special Exhibition

Travel in the Edo Period: Highways and Landscapes (tentative title)

Duration: September 28 (Fri) to November 11 (Sun), 2012

It was during the Edo Period (1603-1868) that traffic networks developed and leisure travel became available to the masses, setting a precedent for today's tourism boom. This exhibition looks at the many different modes of travel in the Edo Period through highway maps and guide books of the period, travel journals, and landscape sketches.
