Steps toward Recovery and Restoration: Accelerating Restoration on the Back of Universal Support (July 2011)

We have continued to receive a number of kind offers of assistance both from in Japan and abroad. On the back of such support, we are determined to take steps forward together, in order to regain our hometown, “Sendai, the City of Trees” and to create a city full of hope—one that is more safe and secure than ever before.

Progress in removal and disposal of debris

In the eastern district which sustained significant damage in the tsunami, the removal of debris progressed steadily. As the removal work is mostly completed in the residential areas, work is now in progress in the agricultural areas now (removal rate: 48%). A number of local business operators gathered at the debris collection site where debris was neatly separated into wood, metals, concrete, etc. Incineration of combustible materials using temporary incinerators is scheduled to start in September.

The City of Sendai aims to complete the removal of debris by the end of the year. (The picture above shows a debris collection site in Ido district in Wakabayashi Ward.)
