Beware of Black Bears

In autumn, chances of encountering black bears before they enter hibernation becomes higher, as they appear close to human inhabited areas to gather food. If your house has trees of persimmon or chestnut, we recommend that you pick the fruits ahead of time.
In areas where bear sightings have been reported, please bring bells or a radio with you when you go out, and be especially aware in mornings and evenings. In the event that you encountered a bear, do not panic, face the bear squarely and slowly step backwards. Information regarding bear sightings is available on the "Bear Sighting Map" on the official website of the City of Sendai or the e-mail distribution service (advance registration is required).
