Residence Registration/Moving(part1) -Sendai Living Information-

Within 14 days starting from the day when you settled in your address after entering Japan

Ward Office (Family and Resident Registration Section/戸籍住民課 Koseki-Jumin-ka) or General Branch (Taxation and Resident Registration Section at Miyagi General Branch, Tax and Resident Affairs Section at Akiu General Branch 税務住民課/Zeimu-Jumin-ka) where you live.

*Submissions are open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays. Notifications are not accepted on weekends.

Passports

Bring the passports of all individuals who moved in (Use to confirm when one entered Japan, etc.)

Special Permanent Resident Certificate

or

Residence Card

When those moving in are foreign nationals. For foreign nationals moving into Japan who have yet to receive their residence cards, they should present a passport with a statement in regards to said move

Certified copy of the complete family register with all items listed on it (or the official copy of the family register)

Copy of the supplementary family register

Not necessary if the address on one’s registered domicile is located within Sendai City and can be accurately located

(In the event that you came to Japan with your family, or your family already lives in Japan in the municipality where you are planning to register as a resident: an identification document issued by an official agency in your home country declaring your familial relationships (e.g. Certificate of Family Matters, Marriage Certificate, Birth Certificate, etc.) and a Japanese translation of said document is needed. * Please have the translator sign any translated documents)

If the individual moving in is a card holder

Within 14 days starting from the day when you moved to your new residence – please note that this may not the same day as when you submitted your Moving Out Notification at the municipality where you previously resided in.

Moving Out Certificate

To be issued by and received from the municipality where you previously resided in when you submit your Moving Out Notification

Bring the cards of all individuals who are moving in, as the address on the cards will need to be changed

Changes can be made as long as the person handling the procedure is a members of the same household as the card holder at their new address (However, the 4-digit password associating with one’s basic resident registration will be required for the procedure)

Residence Card

Bring the cards of all individuals who are moving in, as the address on the cards will need to be changed

National Health Insurance Card

In the case that one is a card holder of the Sendai City National Health Insurance Card due to domicile exception, education, etc.

OR

The cards of all members of the household must be submitted if the household is enrolled in the National Health Insurance, and there is a change in head of the household

(Depending on the procedure, the insurance cards might be sent via post on a later date)

This procedure can be performed starting from approximately 14 days before your planned moving date, or even after you have already moved. In that case, submit the notification within 14 days of moving (postal submission is possible).
