Sendai City Museum will be closed from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2024 for a major renovation.
Duration: May 12(Wed) to June 20(Sun)
Sendai City Museum will mark the 60th anniversary of its establishment this year. This exhibition introduces a selection of masterpieces from our museum collection tocommemorate this occasion, in addition to show the allure of these selections from a variety of perspectives. The display invites you to “Immerse” yourself in items which symbolize Lord DATE Masamune, “Trace” the journey of the HASEKURA Tsunenaga Mission through the national treasure known as “The materials related to the Keicho-era mission to Europe,” and “Decipher” the minds of warriors hiddenin “shapes” of their weapons and armors, and “signs” on them. Further more, we hope you will “Encounter” the human lives and culture of that time through portraits and furnishings and enjoy paintings by “Comparing.”

Rijksmuseum van Oudheden (the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden) prides itself in having aleading Egyptian collection in Europe. For this exhibition, we have carefully selected approximately 250 pieces to borrow from the museum’s Egyptian collection that is excellent both in quantity and quality, including mummies of humans and animals, coffins, stelae, and papyrus. This exhibition reveals various aspects of ancient Egyptian civilization, ranging from the Egyptian people’s lifestyle and society to their outlook on life and death.
Furthermore, this exhibition introduces the latest findings traced by employing scientifictechnology, including medical knowledge of the ancient Egyptians, mummification process, and their aesthetic sense of color and shape at the time.
