A special exhibition to pray for reconstruction from the Great East Japan Earthquake
Kichijo-Tennyo Descended to Earth! A portrait of Kichijo-Tennyo designated as a National Treasure
A Prayer for the Future: Yakushiji Temple in Nara Prefecture
Duration: April 24(Fri) to June 21(Sun)
Yakushiji Temple’s construction was ordered in 680 by the Emperor Tenmu for his wife, the queen (later the Empress Jito) to cure her illness through Buddhist prayer. In this exhibit, two of the finest examples of ancient Buddhist culture are displayed: The portrait of a Heavenly Nymph (Kichijo Tennyo zou) and the standing statue of Sho Kanzeon Bosatsu (both national treasures).

Special Exhibition
UKIYO-E MASTERPIECES OF HIRAKI COLLECTION
Duration: July 17(Fri) to September 6(Sun)
The HIRAKI Collection of Ukiyo-e art, composed of pieces belonging to the SAITO HO-ON KAI Association, is a precious collection of pieces that trace an extensive history of Ukiyo-e. In this exhibit, we provide examples of masterpieces from the early age of Ukiyo-e to the masters who created its golden age, KITAGAWA Utamaro, KATSUSHIKA Hokusai, and UTAGAWA Hiroshige. Please enjoy these extremely high-quality examples of Ukiyo-e, both an important cultural property and priceless works of art.

A special exhibition commemorating the 40th anniversary of our historical sister city relationship
Treasures of the Date Family of the Uwajima Domain
Duration: October 9(Fri) to November 23(Mon/National holiday)
Uwajima City in Aichi Prefecture is where DATE Hidemune, the eldest son of DATE Masamune, established the Uwajima DATE Family and the surrounding land over which he ruled. From this connection, the Sendai DATE Family and Uwajima DATE Family have a profound relationship since the Edo period, and to this day Sendai City and Uwajima City continue to deepen their sister city connections.
In this exhibition, a number of masterpieces and paintings, including the Important Cultural Property, “Portrait of TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi”, as well as other crafts and artworks from the Uwajima DATE Family, will be on display. As this year is the 400th anniversary of the installation of DATE Hidemune’s rule in Uwajima, it is an excellent opportunity to experience the gorgeous Daimyo culture of Uwajima-han.

An exhibition commemorating the completion of The History of Sendai City and the opening of the Sendai Subway Tozai Line
Rediscover Sendai! (Tentative)
Duration: December 5(Sat) to February 28(Sun)
To commemorate the completion of the 32-volume “History of Sendai,” whose publication began in 1994 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the municipal organization of the city, here we exhibit a variety of perspectives on the history of Sendai through the materials researched and collected from this set.
From the time when the kanji of Sendai was known as 千代 (Now it’s 仙台), to its development as a castle town by the DATE family, and its growth into a government-designed municipality, the course of Sendai’s history rests in the work compiled in this 32-volume collection.
