Large Quantities of Waste Due to Moving House

You can NOT put out bulky waste and or large quantities of waste at household garbage collection points. Please dispose them in one of the  following ways (fee-based). However, the four main household electric appliances (air conditioners, TV sets, refrigerators / freezers, washing machines / clothes dryers) and PCs, etc. are NOT collected by the city. For more details on how to dispose of them, please check the official website of the City of Sendai or inquire at the numbers below.

  1. Apply for Bulky Waste Collection (Collection is done about once every two weeks)

The Timetable for Sendai City Buses Will Change on April 1st

Please check the new timetable of Sendai City buses which will be distributed, or on the official website of the Sendai City Transportation Bureau from March 18th (Fri.). (Those who wish to receive the time table by post or FAX should inquire to the Transportation Bureau Information Center.)

Water & Sewage Fee Reduction and Exemption for Households on Welfare and Households Receiving the Support Benefit

  • Reduction or Exemption Period: From the month following application to March 2023
  • Eligibility: Households on welfare and households receiving the support benefit for Japanese war orphans who returned from China, etc.
  • Amount of Reduction and Exemption: Basic fees for water and all fees for sewage.
  • If you apply to receive the reduction and exemption for the first time, or have been receiving the reduction and exemption but have not submitted a letter of consent, please visit the Welfare Section of the Ward Office of your residence or Miyagi General Branch for applications.
  • Depending on the type of building you reside in or the status of water usage, you may not be eligible for these reduction and exemptions.

Notice of Japanese Class

Japanese citizen volunteers provide Japanese lessons for foreign residents living in Sendai city.

  1. Sendai Japanese Language Course (Term1)
    ◆Term Period: April 12th - September 9th (There will be a test to determine class levels on April 8th (Fri.), starting at 10:00 a.m. for beginners, at 11:30 a.m. for other levels.)
    ◆Class Day: Every Tue. - Fri. (differs between classes)
    ◆Place: Aoba-ku Chuo Shimin Center (2-1-4 Ichibancho, Aoba-ku)
    ◆Classes: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Kanji, etc.

Currently Taking Applications for Municipal Housing
―Applications Accepted until March 16 ―

This time a point system that assigns points based on the degree of financial hardship, housing status and the burden ratio of rent, etc. of the applicant will be used to determine potential residents. Applicants with the highest needs will be given higher amount of points. In the case that there are multiple applicants with the same amount of points there will be a lottery held.

  • “Application Guides for Sendai City Municipal Housing” are available from March 4 (Fri.) at the following locations:

  • How to apply: Choose one municipal housing unit from the table, fill out the application form attached to the application guide and mail it in the provided envelope by March 16 (Wed.). In the event that there are more applications than available housing, applications will be chosen by lottery.
  • How to decide residents (point system):
    Residents are going to be decided in order of higher scores which gave scores based on the declaration of living hardship about the living space and living circumstance of facilities, such as bathroom, etc. per household, the burden ratio of rent per household, household status of a single parent households, disabled households, etc., the risk of eviction, and the needs of housing due to multiple times failure, etc.
  • Earliest move-in date: July 6 (Wed.) (tentative)
  • Eligibility: Those who fulfill all of the following requirements
  1. Those that have difficulty finding a place to live.
  2. Those that have relatives who are currently living together or are planning to live together.
  3. Those that reside or working in Sendai City.
    There are other conditions such as an income must be lower than a certain amount, etc. For more details, please see the application guide or inquire.

Applications from those whose residence was in an area under the evacuation orders after the 2011 nuclear disaster, evacuees who resided in areas eligible for support based on the Children and Victims Support Act, and those who are victims of DV or criminals are also accepted, but may differ in requirements of application condition.
