Declaration of Inhabitant Tax

Please file your tax declaration by post to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
<Those who are required to declare Inhabitant tax>

  • Those who lived in Sendai City as of January 1, 2022 and to whom " Those who are NOT required to declare Inhabitant tax " does not apply.
    (Please be aware that you are required to declare Inhabitant tax even if you did not earn any income during 2021.If you do not file a tax declaration, the City of Sendai may not be able to issue you a tax exemption certificate, etc.)

<Those who are NOT required to declare Inhabitant tax>

  • Those who file an income tax return.
  • Those who earn only a salary or who only live on public pension, etc. (You are required to declare inhabitant tax if you have NOT applied the year-end adjustment, because you got a new job, left a job or retired in the middle of the appropriate year, or if you are going to be subject to exemptions which is not listed on a certificate of income and withholding tax, such as an exemption of medical expenses.)

Tax Notifications

Please file Income tax, and declare Inhabitant tax by March 15 (Tue.), 2022.
We ask that those filing taxes do so online through the e-tax service found on the National Tax Agency Website, or by post to prevent the spread of COVID-19. (Inhabitant tax is not payable online through the e-tax)
<About Listing Individual Number and Identify Documents of Individual Number, etc.>

  • On both the Income tax returns and Inhabitant tax declaration, you must have your own Individual Number listed, and that of your qualified spouse (sharing living expenses) and dependents for deduction.
  • At the time of filing your documents, you are required to show proof of the applicants Individual number and proof of identification. (For the Individual Number of spouses (sharing living expenses) and dependents you are not required to show their identifications.)

Loan System to Help Fund School Entry

  • Eligibility: Households who have been residing in Sendai City for 6 months or longer at the time of application and cannot afford the expenses of their child entering school.
  • Loan upper limits etc.:
  1. Elementary and Junior high schools(Excludes households on welfare)/50,000 yen or less
  2. Public high schools /100,000 yen or less
  3. Private high schools /150,000 yen or less

 *No interest is incurred for these loans.

  • Repayment: Within exactly 20 months after 2 months of grace period. (If you take out a loan of 150,000 yen, repayment period is within exactly 30 months.)
  • There is an application screening process.
  • You must have a guarantor who is living in Sendai City.
  • Application period: By March 31, 2022

Preventing Frozen Water Pipes

Water pipes freeze with ease when temperatures drops below minus 4 degrees. Water will not run when water pipes have frozen, thawing frozen water pipes work by a contractor may be necessary, water pipes may burst and you will be required to pay for repair works. Caution is advised particularly for exposed water pipes and water pipes that are in heavily shaded or windy areas. Please ensure that you take appropriate preventative measures listed below.

  • Check where to find the main water shut-off valve at your place and how it works. There are two types of water main water shut-off valve, manual handle type and motorized type.
  • Make sure to drain water with the main water shut-off valve when the temperature is expected to get low, and when away from home and not using water for a while.
  • Insulate or cover exposed water pipes and meter boxes without insulation, with Styrofoam insulating materials, etc.

Using Online Reception of Bulky Waste for Pickup

The bulky waste reception center's phone line is congested on days such as the day following a holiday, you can avoid this by applying online. Applications can be made at any time as the reception operates 24 hours, and settings for changing or cancelling the application are also available. (Japanese only)

  • Only waste items listed on the official website of the City of Sendai can be applied for using online application. (Regarding items which are NOT listed, please apply by phone.)
